Everywhere in the world women live longer than men - but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn't live longer than men in the 19th century. Why do women live longer than men in the present and how have these advantages gotten bigger over time? The evidence is limited and we're left with only partial answers. While we are aware that there are biological, psychological, and environmental factors which all play a part in women's longevity more than men, we do not know how much each factor contributes.

In spite of the amount of weight, we are aware that at least part of the reason women live so much longer than men in the present but not in the past, has to relate to the fact that certain key non-biological factors have changed. What are these changing factors? Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Others are more complicated. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women's longevity disproportionately.

The chart above shows that although the female advantage exists in all countries, difference between countries is huge. In Russia women have an average of 10 years more than males; while in Bhutan the difference is less than half a year.

Let's examine how the female advantage in terms of longevity has changed over time. The following chart shows the men and women's life expectancies when they were born in the US in the years 1790-2014. Two points stand out.

First, there is an upward trend: Men as well as women in the US live a lot, much longer than they did a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

The second is that there is an ever-widening gap: female advantage in terms of life expectancy used be quite small however, it has increased significantly in the past century.
