The succulent can be grown in containers but drainage holes are important for allowing excess water to drain freely. This happens because cells get clogged with water molecules and start to bulge. The old leaves wither and die after the new leaves appear. Any leaves that are not new should be removed immediately. Otherwise, they could spread disease to the main plants. However, a cactus that has been overwatered does not need to die. Cactus color can become dull and washed out if it is overwatered.
