Are Dietary Supplements Safe? Simply because They're Called "Natural" Does not Mean They're Safe
Summer time is over; the young children are available in school; vacations are becoming memories; and an increasing number of folks turn their attention on the task of "dropping those few extra pounds" before the holidays. It's such a prevalent sensation that the weight loss business describes it as, "the wintertime diet season." Especially during these months, many well-intentioned (but misguided) people choose whatever they believe are natural" and "safe methods which will accelerate weight reduction with little habit change.
Lately, Abbott Laboratories, producer of Meridia, opted to pull the diet drug out of the market right after failing to win the acceptance of a safety advisory panel connected with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The latter requested that Abbott withdraw the drug; they complied. At exactly the same period, the FDA warned customers against a dietary supplement - Slimming Beauty Bitter Orange Slimming Capsules- due to its active component, Sibutramine, (found in Meridia).
For perspective, the FDA approved Sibutramine in 1997 for being overweight management, including maintenance and weight loss of fat burning (which - I point out - they said needs to be coupled with exercise and diet). Twelve years down the line, a big study discovered that individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease that took such medicines had an elevated risk of heart attacks and stroke , as well as uneven heartbeat and also shortness of breath.
What is particularly troubling is that a recent report indicates that numerous dietary supplements, whose bill themselves as "natural," are actually laden with lab medications - including some illegal ones.
Researchers in Hong Kong analyzed 81 weight loss items taken by patients who came in to the clinic for treatment for poisoning (one of that had died). They discovered 2 or even more pharmaceutical agents in sixty one of the supplements, and also 2 supplements contained 6 medications. The authors caution the results of theirs should not be interpreted as an entire analysis of the weight loss supplement market; however, it bears noting that in the very good ole U.S. of A., roughly thirty four dolars billion is spent yearly on alternative medicine, including supplements. This equates to aproximatelly $110 per male, woman, and kid per year. Several of these products, sometimes called "botanical supplements" or "herbal remedies," are not properly studied in accordance with research published in Chemical & Engineering News. In some cases, they note, the ingredients can be harmful.
Within the past 2 years, the FDA has alerted customers aproximatelly 72 weight-loss supplements containing such undeclared drugs. In addition to the above referenced Sibutramine, they found Fluoxetine, an antidepressant best fat burner 2022 (Read the Full Posting) known as Prozac. More disturbingly, a number of them contained banned drugs; like the laxative phenolphthalein, that was outlawed due to an association with cancer. More notoriously, the appetite suppressant Fenfluramine was found in a few supplements. As a refresher, Fenfluramine was the "fen" in the Fen phen diet pill, that was yanked out of the U.S. in 1997 for the connection of its with heart attacks.
Herbs, vitamins, or perhaps natural supplements can be great additions to boost one's health. Nevertheless, it's urgent to remember that "health" is always the top objective, and the most "natural" solution to enhance that is moving a bit more and eat a little less. It probably won't be quick, but there are very few side effects.
