Portulacaria, the shrub succulent Portulacaria (elephant's meal) once covered approximately 2 1/2 million acres of its native South Africa. But its population has been reduced significantly by overgrazing sheep and goats. Native to the grasslands of Lesotho and South Africa, the torch plant is a hardy succulent well adapted to living in arid areas. It is a Madagascar-native. Too much direct sun can cause damage to your plant. The nursery is only a few miles away from the ocean so this white-striped Azave is fine in full sunshine. You may need to protect your skin from fine perlite. Fine hairs can shade plants, protect them from the sun's ultraviolet radiation, reduce moisture loss, and keep pests away.
