The succulent is very sun-loving but can be cold-tolerant. I added another "river" with rocks and additional succulents (still cold-hardy Sempervivums or Sedums) to my original post. Finally, I added a top dressing. I've always admired Cindy's succulent creations and was fortunate enough to have her create some for my book, Idiot's Guide: Succulents. It is very welcoming. Once I had the dead plants removed, I took out most of the soil. As you know, in order for succulents to develop strong roots they need the soil to be soaked but then dry out within the next few days. The soil should always be allowed to fully dry out before watering again. This will allow the soil to dry out completely, which will help prevent rot at its base. But the only thing you need to do is water the plant one last time and keep it in a relatively dark room until spring. It is best to place the plant in a south-facing area, but avoid direct sunlight. Next, place the plant in the new soil. This can alter the soil's pH and cause damage to your plant. Too much water can cause the leaves to swell, become soft and mushy, and eventually fall off. It didn't get watered for more than one week, so we forgot about it. Water also strips spider mites from their protective webbing making them more susceptible.
