They are now looking out for suspicious behavior such as people who emerge from hiking trails carrying heavy backpacks and ropes. These backpacks can be bulging and contain telltale roots and stems. A dudleya in the Santa Ana winds season looks like a pile with withered leaves, perhaps with some dry flower stems sticking out.
