In my latest video I show you three very different succulent gardens in coastal Los Angeles on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. 2. You should ensure that your parent plant is strong. Do not propagate from plants with weak roots or yellow leaves. It's one the two tough ground coverings that the couple has in their garden. Pam cuts the 3-foot-long dying specimen from 'Sunburst,' as it blooms. I was shocked to see the ground beneath. It's dry and hardpacked, not a good environment for earthworms and other beneficials. What was that dark area? These are the botanical names of the plants: Aeonium pulchellum (Sunset Gold); Coleonema album; Coleonema macrocarpa [dark-colored shrub with pinwheel yellow flowers, aka Natal plum]; Coleonema canariense (Aeonium); Convolvulus.

She is Marsha Rafter's protégée, and her garden and artworks can be viewed here. One artist painted a watercolor portrait of Pam's garden for the spring San Diego Horticultural Society gardening tour. The flow of each area within Pam and Tim's garden is something I admire (and envy). There are more options if you add in the succulent-filled back yard (with its tough, intriguing lawn alternative); cozy benches within garden nooks; semi-shaded patio garden; and a nicely hidden utility space. The Jaras back yard faces south so it receives a lot of sun. It should therefore be shaded, ideally dappled. There are many options for decorating your cactus gardens. You can use colored pebbles or small stones, large stones, rocks, and figurines. Once you're ready to place your cacti into the soil, make small holes in the soil just deep enough to allow the roots of the cacti to fit in. It is important to use the correct plants, soil, pottery, and be open to trying out different things to find what works best for your plants.

These do make the garden airy and open, but have a downside: Depending on the angle of the sun during the year, the glass may magnify the sun's rays and fry plants. If it's dirty, it can spread bacteria and other germs to the stem-cutting surface or the mother plant. Stem cuttings should not be used on leaves. Stem rot is caused by a fungus and pest infestation, or water penetrating through an open wound on the plant. It will look great in a tall vase for several weeks and can live off stored moisture so it doesn't require water. Their cacti and succulents front yard were the talk of the block a decade ago. You can also add nutrients to plants using composted materials. Whether you decide to start from cuttings or a leaf, as long as your succulent is happy, this is a great way to get more plants.

Your plants will take time to adjust. Pam's favorite is Aeonium ‘Sunburst’, which (being an arboreum-species) grows tall and stays unbranched throughout its life. The Tricolor Jade can reach eight feet if it is grown in an area or container that is large enough. The canopies are now knitted together and they stand 7 to 8 feet high. Tim pruned the garden's melaleucas so that they resemble bonsai. He also thinned their canopies to allow more light in and not block views. Tim keeps the SDBG's bamboo forests beautiful and Pam maintains the Garden’s famous life-size topiary dancers, as well as the sea-themed succulent display. Keep your succulents protected until you know where they are best suited to grow. With its pergola-style roof and granite countertops, the cocktails-and-barbecue area suggests an outdoor kitchen. A three-tier dry fountain, containing succulents, is located in the area. June explains in the video how often to water succulents she uses ceramic pots and red and blue glass to create a patio seating/dining area that seamlessly blends indoors and outdoors. Rich shares his garden with us in my latest video. It measures 960 square feet and is 20 feet high. Pam and Tim have a combined plant knowledge that is reflected in the garden which is shaded from Melaleuca lapeolata trees.

Pepper trees and a privet fence border the slope at the summit. A lawn is located along the bottom. Mangave Catcha Wave' is in my garden. Also, as shown on Walters Gardens website. Although I've never done it myself, I've seen weedcloth in friends' gardens placed on slopes. The baker variation looks more like an ole plant. The unique forms and adaptive features of the cactus make them one of nature's most recognisable desert plants. Marsha is most well-known for her mandalas or commissions. She also has a freestanding paddle cactus. These succulents thrive best in room temperature. It's easy to follow the instructions and you will find great solutions for growing succulents. Cacti can be grown outdoors without the need to put them in direct sunlight. You might choose to grow cacti species that are faster than others if you want your plants to grow like we do.
