It can be grown in my garden in Southern California, but it prefers to live in its native habitats of Central America and South America.
Jim saw the two-page page of Jim's veranda gardening in the book and realized he hadn't considered a key principle of good design: pattern repetition. Since June 2006, I have been following the remarkable garden's progress since meeting Jim and Scott. It's also in my succulent books. I have written about it for the San Diego Union Tribune, Better Homes & Gardens and Sunset. The courtyard and veranda areas also benefit from the pots-atop–pavers design. Veranda gardens as described in Designing with Succulents. Jim, a retired garden designer and past-president of the San Diego Horticultural Society, sculpted the terrain below his 1930s Spanish colonial home over the past 22 years. Gophers can eat roots and ruin landings. Jim says steps that were part of a tower constructed by Marc Tarasuck 20 years ago during a major remodel lead to the "coldest swimming pool on earth" where it once was. Switchback steps lead to terraces that contain a variety of plants. Each one has its own story. As he explains in the second of my videos about his garden, typical blocks for terraces weigh 60 pounds. Jim is an artist as much as he is a plantsman.
