A succulent pest, which leaves are covered with bumps, recently discovered its way onto this sempervivum. Use a pair if sharp, clean pruning shears. Cut from the point by following the leaves. I recently took you to a newly renovated collector’s garden north San Diego. This garden has been a favorite of mine since 2008. Topdressing is necessary for succulent gardens. Add topdressing. Begin by swathes rubble rock bordering pathways. Steve uses a combination of three types of rock, including boulders that mix blue-gray, purple and rust. At KRC Rock they're called Honey Quartz; and at other suppliers---such as Southwest Boulder & Stone---Apache Sunset. Left: rubble rock; middle, 3/8 inch gravel; right, ornamental boulder. Note drain at lower right. Last night's temperature was predicted to be 30 degrees. But, my garden could have been lower because of the cold and settled air.

If your area is prone to very cold weather, where the temperature often falls below 20deg Fahrenheit, it is advisable to plant your Sedum adolphi in containers, so that you can take them indoors when cold weather is forecast. It's like cleaning out your closet. You take out what you don't need, but keep what you do have. Then, decide what, if any, you should add. How to keep cats away You can keep cats away from your plants by placing them behind a sheer curtains if it's hot. So, if you are growing it in a container, make sure the pot can accommodate its growth without roots getting damaged against the edges of the container. Consider how many plants your container will hold. Remove your succulents or other cacti and gently lift them out of the container. Next, massage the roots lightly to get rid of any excess soil. The roots of the plants are crucial for survival and growth in severe conditions. If you are unhappy with any of the plants, whether they are tired, ailing or poorly located, take them out. This new malady made me want to update my popular YouTube succulent pest video, but unfortunately I no longer have the original file.

Steve shows the garden nearing completion in the video. Enjoy the Garden, Come See It and Use It! Was your succulent able to return to its original form? You can trim, prune and remove any excess growth. Back then, music was required for any video. Actually, the video's fine as is, except for the music. I'm fine with ID'ing problems and diseases, especially for subscribers to my newsletter. Make sure to bookmark the website's frequently-updated Succulent Pests Diseases and Problems section. It can spread and even become deadly. Aeonium mardi gras can be propagated by leaf cuttings taken from the parent plant. 2. Check the leaf. Renovate the garden's hardscape and walkways. I found this table while I was in their backyard. The highest elevations have temperatures well over 32F and valleys below. Others not covered (above), are worse. You can collect mature, dried seeds and sow them on our soil. The hard seeds are useful in oil production. For it all to come together, you only have to look at Old Lady Cactus in bloom. If one fails, don't give up!

3: Give succulent roots a fighting chance if the soil is dense and hard to dig. Spade it and add nutrients before you plant. Clear the dirt from your pot to get a better look at the roots. Add boulders so they look natural---not evenly spaced or in straight lines, but rather solo and in groupings. Solution: Steve placed boulders on the slope to create a random staircase. He then topdressed it with bark mulch. Steve also brought in more soil than 24 yards, along with warm-hued, boulders, and conophytum burgeri gravel. Copper Canyon rubble is a large-sized rock that is not as hard as gravel but which is still quite manageable. Recover any soil left unattended with two inches of gravel. These two love succulents. Euphorbia lambii is a great choice. I did gasp. The leaves looked like Swiss fabric. It has rosettes of green leaves and hairy margins. First year the plant was almost green and needed more water as usual succulent.

Otherwise known as the Trailing Jade, the Senecio jacobsensii has foliage in a beautiful shade of green. It is not good for the plants or you. Severe mite infestations could cause serious damage to your succulents or even cause death. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor your plants' health. Even if the plant is new to you, it is very easy to grow. If you live outside of my area, there might be a pest you don't know about. Root rot can be revived if you catch it in its early stages. Once the rot progresses up the stem, however, it's very unlikely that your plant will survive. You'll still have plenty time to treat any thirst problems and prevent permanent damage to your plant. We have not yet removed the flowering stem from the succulent, but it still produced pups.

Even the succulents I had covered are showing patches of tissue damage. Some species, however, can bloom freely without any intervention or care. Although the layout was beautiful, much of the plant material had to be removed to allow for large, mature specimens to be seen. At the owners' request, Steve brought in additional stunning specimens to add to their collection. Steve lined it with Geotex and pond liner, to prevent soil from drying out. The best outdoor cactus depends on many factors, including the climate, soil conditions, and location where you intend to plant it. What is the Main Habitat of Golden Barrel Cactus You can evaluate the location from various vantage points before you plant. Above: Five years ago, "Before" planting. Above: Impact damage to aeoniums by strong winds blowing small rocks. To my amazement (and relief), exposed Aeoniums survived the frost without any problems. The majority of their plants are healthy.
