Cuttings should be taken from healthy plants with plump leaves. This is not the case for stressed or dehydrated plants. Low light conditions make the fleshy leaves appear translucent, similar to dolphins. One problem with low light is that succulents will only show their vivid colors when they are exposed to lots of sunlight.
