Annie Schreck, Mountain Crest Gardens researcher and on-air host, will join me for a video series about succulent adventures. Mountain Crest Gardens nursery is my proud affiliation. Aloe barberae (aka Aloe bainesii, Aloidendron barberae), Africa's largest aloe, is sculptural, intriguing and dramatic. Jeff explained that a 2008 wildfire caused damage to his home and also to an Aloe barberae. Although nurseries sell boxed and rooted specimens for thousands, Aloe Barbarae is able to start from cuttings. Larger plants can even be branched up to several feet. I suspect you may be, too, when you browse the eye-candy below. This will eventually cause your succulent roots to become too moist and may lead to it rotting. The trunks and bases of succulents can become very large over time. Don't place them near buildings, pipes, or pools. You may find that your plant is fine after only a few days in the sun. If your existing Christmas Cactus is quite small, it may make more sense to take a smaller section of the plant. If a leaf is broken, I will not propagate this plant from it.

Let us take some time to learn overwatered succulent remedies. Jeff plants cuttings, truncheons in sand for a few weeks. Then, dip cotton swabs in 70% isopropyl rub alcohol and then apply the pesticide to your skin. Pesticide soap products can paralyze pests when they reach the area it has been applied. To be effective, these products must be eaten by pests. Page 114 – In the Thinking Outside the Pot section I am a little unsure about the statement that "succulents do not depend on their roots for survival." They can live for a very long time off their reserves but eventually they will need to plant some new roots. Roots that appear black, brown, or feel wet may be signs of rot. Are you like many others, the black thumb that fails to succeed no matter what effort they make? We happily overlap in the realm of container gardening. We will show you how to properly water your indoor cactus plants and how to make them thrive.

Your succulent stores water in its leaves so that it can only use the water it needs. If your succulent leaves start to turn brown and become soft, it could be a sign that their roots have started to rot. Root rot can only be prevented if you keep the soil dry between waterings. Without balancing these elements your succulent will easily succumb to issues like root rot or excessive nitrogen. Your succulents will be grateful for this as it makes the potting media dry faster. Proper watering is key to choosing the right soil mixture or growing medium. The simple piece is a hand poked dot work tattoo, a unique method of tattooing that's done without a machine. You can see that I used the second method, which is to lay the stems flat on top of the soil. Sedum burrito, a native to Southern Mexico, is well-known for its long, hanging stems that are covered in dense, plump, blue-green, or lime-green leaves. You can also opt for stems with roots.

Consider adding some tree aloe to your garden if you have the space and your climate is warm with a maritime influence. Yes, he'll cut you a tree Aloe limb. Yes, earth-moving equipment is sometimes needed. Provide plenty of sun, ideally on a slope that's not north-facing (too shady). Light Your grow light should be somewhere in this range, preferably as intense as the succulent's native environment. In warm, dry seasons, you'll obviously need to water your succulents far more frequently than you would during that succulent's winter dormancy period. Minimal rainfall is another problem, so the Laguna Beach Water District and the garden club work tirelessly to raise community awareness of water conservation. The Laguna Beach Garden Club hosts the tour as a charity fundraiser. Whenever I go on the annual Laguna Beach Gate & Garden Tour, I hunt succulents. Laguna has its challenges. The magazine didn't have room for all the ideas I sent. Please tell nursery managers or owners that Debra sent you! Jeff's home nursery is a landscaped, 4.5-acre botanic garden in which every plant is for sale. Even though it does not affect the health of a mature specimen, it may jeopardize the growth of a young plant.

MCG's greenhouses will grow plants to a size of 3 inches. But what starts in a pot that is 3-inches in diameter can become a massive plant in 20-years. Give the plant a good soaking until water drains out of the hole of the pot. A well-drained soil mix is best for your Spiral Spurge. This can be obtained at a local plant shop. To propagate blue chalk sticks younger plants, you can use a parent Crassulaovata plant. Also, ensure that your cuttings and plants are healthy for the best yield. Loamy and sandy soil is best for planting. Give your plant another day to dry if the soil feels wet. When positioning your snake plant indoors, consider possible contact with children or pets. You can trim them as finely as possible using garden scissors. The Water District's headquarters features a wonderful succulent garden. I seldom water the plants in winter because it is when we get the most rain.

Winter dormant succulents include cactus plants, air plants, and others. In the video above, Annie and I discuss how and why succulents became superstars in the garden and floral world. Laura Eubanks from Design for Serenity (soon The Succulent Child) in front her mounded gardens. Celebrity designer Laura Eubanks created a huge mound of soil filled with succulents. She then explained the process to the crowd and supervised young people. We would recommend practicing the process of propagating the pesky things before making a bulk investment. What brought Annie from far northern CA to the Epicenter of All Things Succulent? As far as my knowledge goes, these plants are not able to be propagated by leaf cuttings. Succulent plants are durable, but they require certain conditions to grow well. It's also a good idea that you don't plant your succulents at the bottom or side of a slope.

Instead, water can be used to your benefit. A top dressing is a subtle blend of colors from the various succulents I use to bring the elements together. During their week in San Diego, I took Annie and Jeremy-the-videographer to top succulent destinations (some well known, some not). My site contains a list of succulent places in San Diego (and other areas) that I don't want to reveal. Laguna's annual SmartScape Expo is held here. This free event features landscape experts, workshops and irrigation advice. Succulents, being both beautiful and waterwise, are a popular landscape solution. Now that you've learned everything about watch-chain succulents, it's time to take care of your plant. Some succulents will thrive if left in the heat. Others might die if they aren't taken care of. This contrast will help create a most desirable floral display. Descriptions will help you narrow down your options. There are many options for luxury hotels, spas and eateries in the city, but you also have the option to explore the Sonoran Desert.
