For a series of video adventures about succulents, Annie Schreck (on-air host, researcher at Mountain Crest Gardens) will be joining me. Mountain Crest Gardens nursery, with which I'm proudly affiliated, is the largest mail-order succulent supplier. Aloe barberae (also known as Aloe bainesii and Aloidendron barberae), Africa’s largest aloe vera is stunning, dramatic, and sculptural. Jeff explained to Jeff that when a wildfire ravaged his house in 2008, it also destroyed a large Aloe barberae. While nurseries may sell root-packed, boxed specimens worth thousands of dollars for their clients, Aloe Barbarae grows easily from cuttings. I suspect you may be, too, when you browse the eye-candy below. Your succulent roots may become dry and brittle over time. Trunks and bases get massive over time, so don't plant close to buildings, pipes or pools. It may be fine if your plant has had only a few days of too much sunlight. It might make sense to remove a portion of your Christmas Cactus that is already quite small. This plant can only be propagated from leaves if the entire leaf has been removed.

Let's take a moment to discuss overwatered succulent solutions. Jeff plants his cuttings or trincheons right away. Some people prefer to let the cuttings or trincheons dry for several days, and then plant them in coarse sand (such decomposed granite). After that, you can dip some cotton swabs with 70% isopropyl alcohol and apply it to the pests. Insecticide soap products paralyze the pests once they reach the area where it has been applied. To be effective, these products must be eaten by pests. Page 114 - In the Thinking Outside the Pot section, I feel a little uneasy about "succulents are not dependent on their roots to survive." Yes, they can go a long time living off their stored reserves, but sooner or later they need to send out some roots! Roots that are dark brown or black and feel damp may indicate that they have rot. Or, perhaps, like many, are you the typical black thumb, the man or woman that never seems to succeed in all their gardening endeavors, regardless of efforts, from sunrise to sunset? Our paths often cross in the field of container gardening. In this post, we are going to teach you how to water your indoor cactus plant properly and how to make it thrive.

Your succulent stores the water it needs within its leaves, so any access water that remains in its soil is only going to become harmful for your little baby. If the leaves become brown and soft, it is likely that the roots have begun to rot. Root rot is preventable if the soil is kept dry between waterings. Your succulent can easily become irritated and succumb to excessive nitrogen or root rot if you don't have the right balance. It helps the potting medium dry faster. This is something your succulents will appreciate as they won't be able to thrive in waterlogged soils. Proper watering goes hand in hand when you have the right mix of soil or growing medium. This simple piece shows a hand-punched dotwork tattoo. This unique method allows you to tattoo your body without the use of a machine. As you can see, the second method was used to lay the stems on the soil. Sedum burrito, a native to Southern Mexico, is well-known for its long, hanging stems that are covered in dense, plump, blue-green, or lime-green leaves. You can also opt for stems with roots.

If you have room in your garden and your climate is mild with a maritime influence, consider adding a tree aloe or two. And yes, he'll whack off a tree aloe limb for you. Sometimes earth-moving equipment might be required. It is important to have plenty of sun. Light This is the ideal range for your grow light, and should be as intense as the native environment. It's obvious that you will water your succulents much more frequently in dry, warm seasons than you would during winter dormancy. Minimal rainfall is another issue, so the Laguna Beach Water District as well as the garden club tirelessly work to increase water conservation awareness in the community. The tour, a charity fundraiser, is hosted by the Laguna Beach Garden Club. I hunt succulents whenever I go on the Laguna Beach Gate & Garden Tour. Laguna is not without its problems. The magazine did not have the space to accommodate all my ideas. Debra sent this to nursery owners and managers. Jeff's home garden is a landscaped botanic garden that spans 4.5 acres. Every plant is for sale. Although it doesn't affect the health of a mature plant, it can hinder its growth.

MCG's greenhouses might only have a 3-inch pot. What grows in that little pot may grow to be enormous in 20 years. Make sure to give the plant enough water to drain from the pot. A well-drained soil mix is best for your Spiral Spurge. This can be obtained at a local plant shop. You can also use a parent Crassula Ovata plant to grow other plants. This will ensure the best yield and health. Soil should be sandy and loamy. Give your plant another day to dry if the soil feels wet. If you are placing your snake plants indoors, be aware of possible contact with pets and children. You can trim them as finely as possible using garden scissors. The Water District's headquarters has a marvelous succulent garden. I rarely water the plants during winter season because that is when we receive the most rain in my area.

Cactus plants, air and other plants are winter dormant succulents. Annie and me discuss why succulents are so successful in the flower and garden worlds. Laura Eubanks from Design for Serenity (soon The Succulent Child) in front her mounded gardens. Laura Eubanks, a celebrity designer, planted a mound of soil with all kinds of succulents. She also supervised a young crew and held her grandbaby. We would recommend practicing the process of propagating the pesky things before making a bulk investment. Annie, a native of northern California, came to the Epicenter of All Things Succulent. As far I know, these plants can not be propagated from leaves. Succulent plants have a high resistance, but they also need special conditions to increase their longevity. It's also a good idea that you don't plant your succulents at the bottom or side of a slope.

You can instead use water to your advantage. I often use a top-dressing that incorporates subtle tones from different succulents. This helps pull together all the elements. During their week in San Diego, I took Annie and Jeremy-the-videographer to top succulent destinations (some well known, some not). My site contains a list of succulent places in San Diego (and other areas) that I don't want to reveal. Laguna's SmartScape Expo hosts an annual family event. There are workshops, landscape experts and irrigation advice. Succulents have a long history of being both beautiful as well as water-wise. Now that you are familiar with the watch chain succulent type, let's get down to the important part of caring for it. If left to the heat and sun, some succulents can survive. Others will burn. It all depends on what type of succulent you have. This will result in a stunning floral arrangement. You can narrow down your options by using descriptions. The city is home to many luxury hotels, spas, eateries, and restaurants. However, you can also see the beautiful Sonoran Desert from many locations.
