Why are women living longer than men?
Everywhere in the world women live longer than men - but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn't live longer than men in the 19th century. What's the main reason women have a longer life span than men? What is the reason has this advantage gotten larger over time? The evidence is sketchy and we're only able to provide some answers. We know that behavioral, biological and environmental factors all contribute to the fact that women have longer lives than men, However, we're not sure how strong the relative contribution of each factor is.
In spite of the precise number of pounds, we know that at least part of the reason women live so much longer than men, but not previously, is to do with the fact that some significant non-biological elements have changed. The factors changing are numerous. Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Some are more complex. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, ماذا يحدث بين الزوجين في الحمام بالصور especially for survivors, ماذا يحدث بين الزوجين في الحمام بالصور ended up raising women's longevity disproportionately.
Everywhere in the world women tend to live longer than men
The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. It is clear that all countries are over the line of parity diagonally. This implies that a baby girl in all countries can be expected to live for longer than her younger brother.
This chart shows that, while there is a female advantage everywhere, cross-country differences can be substantial. In Russia, women live 10 years longer than men. In Bhutan the difference is less that half a year.

The advantage for women in life expectancy was smaller in rich countries as compared to the present.
Let's now look at how the advantage of women in longevity has changed over time. The next chart shows the life expectancy of males and females when they were born in the US during the time period between 1790 and 2014. Two things stand out.
First, there is an upward trend. Both men as well as women in the US live a lot, much longer than they did a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.
The gap is growing: Although the female advantage in life expectancy used to be extremely small but it has risen significantly over time.
When you click on the option "Change country by country' in the chart, you will be able to check that these two points also apply to other countries that have available data: Sweden, France and the UK.
