Everywhere in the world women live longer than men - but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn't live longer than men in the 19th century. What is the reason women are more likely to live longer than men? What is the reason is this difference growing in the past? The evidence is limited and we're left with only some answers. Although we know that there are biological, psychological, and environmental factors which all play a part in women who live longer than men, we do not know how much each factor contributes.

This graph shows that even though women enjoy an advantage across all countries, differences between countries could be significant. In Russia women live 10 years longer than males. In Bhutan there is a difference of only half a year.

In rich countries the female advantage in longevity was not as great.
Let's look at how the gender advantage in longevity has changed with time. The next chart compares the male and female lifespans at birth in the US during the time period between 1790 and 2014. Two distinct features stand out.

First, there is an upward trend: Men as well as women in the US live much, much longer than they did 100 years ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

The gap is growing: Although the advantage of women in terms of life expectancy was extremely small but it has risen significantly with time.
