The Man Who Ate His Earwax
On a recently available flight from Sydney to Melbourne, I was fascinated by the well dressed, educated man on the seat in front of me. He'd a plethora of devices: iPhone, iPad, photocopied handouts of a substitute online newspaper, a print paper and the inflight magazine.
On the eighty minute flight he ploughed by everything before him. But, I was intrigued not only by the interactive magazine on his iPad but also by the obliviousness of his to all the passengers. As he continuously twitched, rubbed his hair style and fidgeted, in addition, he picked the ears of his on a number of occasions, pondered the wax on the fingertip of his then ate it.
Not only was I disgusted and quite shocked - all things considered, this was absolutely no doddery old male and have a pot belly and sprouting nose as well as tvidler ear cleaner (%domain_as_name%`s statement on its official blog) hair who could be forgiven for senility. This person was in his early 30s, nicely dressed and obviously aware of design and image judging by the choice of his of black, well - fitted clothing. But selecting earwax and consuming it in public? Really? The picture of a coiffed and well-manicured gentleman dissolved in an instant. Below was a male so immersed in technology which he did not realise he was snacking on waxy discharge in public.
This made me wonder why he thought he was invisible when there's obviously a planeload of passengers about him. A typical complaint by midlife females is that they are invisible. But, I am able to nearly guarantee that if a well dressed, 50 year old female started picking out her physical bits to eat in public, individuals would certainly notice.
So what made this man think that he had entered a cocoon of secrecy where he could eat as well as fidget away without anyone noticing? Does having a couple of technical gadgets capture our attention so completely we forget the people surrounding us?
Partly it has something to do with the relationship we develop with technology. We immediately personalize the latest devices of ours with passwords, pictures, downloads and then interact quickly with social media. Technology permits us to ignore outside the house stimuli so we are submerged in a world in which only 2 things exist: the interface and ourselves.
Engineering is the best companion; it does what we want, when we wish and wherever we want. We form a new reality and sense of being when we enter technology's lure and also, like the ancient Greek sirens, it's very difficult, once ensnared, to let go.
The drawback of technology would be that we are able to become oblivious of the immediate surroundings of ours, the existence of folks and also the environment.
