On a recently available flight from Sydney to Melbourne, I was fascinated by the well dressed, educated man on the seat in front of me. He had a plethora of devices: iPhone, iPad, photocopied handouts of an alternative online newspaper, a print paper and the inflight magazine.
On the 80 minute flight he ploughed by everything before him. Nevertheless, I was intrigued not only by the interactive magazine on his iPad but additionally by the obliviousness of his to each of the passengers. As he regularly twitched, rubbed the hair style of his and fidgeted, in addition, he selected the ears of his on a number of occasions, pondered the wax on the fingertip of his and after that ate it.
Not merely was I disgusted and rather shocked - after all, this was no doddery aged man and have a pot belly and sprouting nose and ear hair who might be forgiven for senility. This person was in his early 30s, nicely dressed and naturally aware of design and image judging by his choice of white, well - fitted clothes. But picking earwax and consuming it in public? Really? The image of a well-manicured and tvidler honest review (helpful resources) coiffed gentleman dissolved in an instant. Below was a man so immersed in technological innovation which he did not realise he was snacking on waxy discharge in public.
This made me wonder the reason he believed he was invisible when there was clearly a planeload of passengers about him. A typical complaint by midlife ladies is they're invisible. But, I am able to practically guarantee that when a well-dressed, fifty year old lady started picking out her physical bits to eat in public, people would most likely notice.
So what made the male think he'd entered a cocoon of secrecy where he could eat as well as fidget away with no anyone noticing? Does having a pair of technological gadgets capture our attention quite completely we forget the individuals surrounding us?
Partly it's a thing to do with the relationship we develop with technology. We quickly personalize our new devices with passwords, photos, downloads and then interact quickly with social networking. Technology allows us to disregard outdoors stimuli so we are immersed in a world in which only 2 things exist: the interface and ourselves.
Engineering is the ideal companion; it does what we wish, when we would like and where we wish. We form a whole new feeling and reality of being when we get into technology's trick and also, like the ancient Greek sirens, it's extremely difficult, once ensnared, to let go.
The downside of technology would be that we can become oblivious of the immediate surroundings of ours, the existence of men and women as well as the environment.
