Fish Oil and Blood sugar Control - Does it Help Or perhaps Hurt?
A common myth about fish oil (specifically the fatty acids EPA & DHA) is that it enhances the blood sugar levels of yours. I like fish oil and it is able to considerably improve a lot of components of your overall health although the scientific evidence to support the usage of fish oil for blood glucose control is simply not there. In 2006, nutrition juggernaut, Dr. Alice Lichtenstein (and a number of others) wrote a review article that centered on the effects of omega 3 fats and serum makers (e.g. things in our blood) of cardiovascular disease. One of the areas they looked over was blood sugar management.
Two strategies scientists can quantify the' controlling of blood sugar levels' is by Hemoglobin A1c (Fasting blood and hba1c) sugar (FBS) quantities. HbA1c is a long term marker of blood glucose control which is commonly used by doctors to monitor how good their diabetic patients are sticking to the carb of theirs controlled diets. Fasting blood glucose is just what it sounds like - what your blood sugar levels are after you have not eaten for some time (i.e. are fasted); this usually means a right away fast. The researchers looked at 28 different randomized clinical trials (the greatest type of studies for determining cause and effect) and also discovered that fish oil supplementation yielded a broad range of consequences ranging from your 29mg/dL decrease to a 25mg/dL boost (yes you read that right - increase) found FBS.
The findings surrounding the consequences of fish oil supplementation had been equally as thrilling (or perhaps NOT enjoyable) within that here was a little but clinically insignificant effect on HbA1c. This means that from a statistical point of view there was an effect though the effect was so small that it would not have a direct impact on your health/life.
Right after performing some much more of what I call "statistical voodoo" the investigators summarized all of the investigation and came to the realization that fish oil triggered a non significant rise in HbA1c and FBS. So not merely does fish oil don't have any affect on blood sugar control it actually carries a little (very small) negative effect. As I mentioned at the novice, glucotrust bbb I am a major believer of fish oil supplementation as well as suggest that all my clients supplement with fish oil daily but having an EPA/DHA supplement each day in an attempt to manage blood sugar is an exercise in futility.
