Everywhere in the world women live longer than men - but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn't live longer than men in the 19th century. The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. We can see that all countries are over the diagonal line of parity. This means that a newborn girl from every country could anticipate to live longer than her younger brother.

This chart shows that, even though women enjoy an advantage in all countries, the differences across countries can be substantial. In Russia, women live for 10 years longer than males. In Bhutan, the difference is just half a year.

Let's look at how female longevity advantage has changed in the course of time. The chart below shows gender-based and female-specific life expectancy at the birth in the US between 1790 to 2014. Two aspects stand out.

First, there's an upward trend. Both men as well as women in the US live much, much longer than they did 100 years ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

Second, there's an ever-widening gap: female advantage in life expectancy used to be quite small however, it has increased significantly during the last century.
