One of the PAC-organised demonstrations was fired upon by police, resulting within the deaths of 69 protesters in the Sharpeville massacre. The incident introduced worldwide condemnation of the federal government and resulted in rioting throughout South Africa, with Mandela publicly burning his cross in solidarity. Both events took half in an anti-pass marketing campaign in early 1960, during which Africans burned the passes that they had been legally obliged to hold.
