The Man Who Ate His Earwax
On a recent flight from Sydney to Melbourne, I was fascinated by the well dressed, educated male on the seat in front of me. He had a plethora of devices: iPhone, iPad, photocopied handouts of a substitute online newspaper, a print paper and also the inflight magazine.
On the eighty minute flight he ploughed through everything before him. Nonetheless, I was intrigued not just by the active magazine on his iPad but also by his obliviousness tvidler how To use (ccgexchange.online) each of the passengers. As he continuously twitched, rubbed the hair of his and fidgeted, he also selected his ears on a number of occasions, pondered the wax on his finger then ate it.
Not just was I disgusted & rather shocked - all things considered, this was virtually no doddery aged man with a pot belly and sprouting nose as well as ear hair who might be forgiven for senility. This fellow was in his early 30s, nicely dressed and obviously conscious of design & image judging by the choice of his of white, well - fitted clothing. But choosing earwax and eating it in public? Honestly? The image of a coiffed and well-manicured gentleman dissolved in an instant. The following was a male so immersed in technology which he did not realise he was snacking on waxy discharge in public.
This made me wonder the reason he thought he was invisible when there was obviously a planeload of passengers about him. A typical complaint by midlife ladies is that they are invisible. But, I can practically ensure that if a well dressed, 50 year old girl began picking out her bodily bits to eat in public, individuals would certainly notice.
So what made the man think that he'd entered a cocoon of security where he could eat and fidget away without anyone noticing? Does having a set of technical gadgets capture our attention so totally we forget the individuals surrounding us?
Partly it has a little something to do with the relationship we form with technology. We quickly personalize our latest devices with passwords, pictures, downloads and then engage rapidly with social media. Technology allows us to ignore outside stimuli so that we're absorbed in a world where only 2 things exist: the interface and ourselves.
Technology is the best companion; it does what we want, when we would like and where we wish. We form a new reality and feeling of being when we enter technology's lure and, similar to the ancient Greek sirens, it is extremely difficult, once ensnared, to let go.
The drawback of technology is the fact that we are able to become oblivious of our immediate surroundings, the existence of men and women as well as the environment.
